«Optimize the compilation and use of OSH data»

Every day 6,300 people die from work-related accidents or illnesses – more than 2.3 million deaths per year. More than 317 million workplace accidents occur annually, many of these accidents result in absenteeism. The cost of this daily adversity is enormous and the economic burden of poor health and safety practices is estimated at 4 percent of global Gross Domestic Product each year.

The ILO World Day for Safety and Health at Work campaign for 2017 focuses on the critical need for countries to improve their capacity to collect and use reliable data on occupational safety and health (OSH).

The United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted on September 25, 2015, encompasses a global action plan with specific performance targets to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. With its adoption, the ability to collect and use reliable data on OSH has also become essential to meet the commitment of countries to implement and report progress against some of the 17 sustainable development goals and their performance targets.

A national culture of prevention in terms of safety and health at work implies respect for the right to enjoy a safe and healthy work environment at all levels; the active participation of governments, employers, and workers to ensure a safe and healthy working environment through a system of defined rights, responsibilities and duties and the attribution of the highest priority to the principle of prevention.

The celebration of the World Day for Safety and Health at Work consists of an annual international campaign to promote safe, healthy and decent work. April 28 is also the date chosen by the global trade union movement to pay tribute to the victims of work accidents and occupational diseases.
The World Day for Safety and Health at Work, established by the ILO, has been celebrated every April 28 since 2003.
